ELECTROMAGNETIC FIELD THEORY (B.Tech 4th Semester,2122)

NOTE:- This paper consist of Three Sections. Section A is compulsory. Do any Four questions from
Section B and any two questions from Section C

Section-A Marks : 20

1(a) What is equation of continuity for steady currents ?
(b) Write Maxwell's equations derived from Guass's Law, point form.
(c) What is displacement current? Does it exit in free space or not?
(d) Write wave-equation for electric field (along y-axis).
(e) Define characteristics impedence of free space.
(f) Define Poynting vector.
(g) What are TEM, TM and TE waves ?
(h) In equation γ = α + jβ, used in waveguides, define all parameters.
(i) Write equation for wavelength in waveguide, measured in direstion of propagation.
(j) What are different types of waveguides?

Section-B Marks:5 Each

2. A voltage source (v=VMsin(ωt)) is connected to a capacitor C. Show that displacement current is equal
to conduction current.
3. Derive an expression for inductance nad capacitance per unit length of a parallel wire line. (Assume perfect conductors).
4. Describe methods of exciting TE10, TE20, TM11 and TE11 modes in rectangular waveguides.
5. Discuss phase velocity and group velocity and obtain the relation between them.
6. Explain, what is meant by polarization of an electromagnetic wave.

Section-C Marks : 10 Each

7. Derive TE mode field equations for wave propagation alonf a dielectric slab. Discuss the applicability of above
result to the problem
8. (a) What is meant by polarization of an electromagnetic wave ?
(b) For reflection by a perfect insulator, with oblique incid
9. Write niotes on the following :
(a) Poynting Theorm
(b) Biot-Savart's Law
(c) Characteristics Impedence.
